2. weekend in cinque terre
The five cities on the Italian coast are a major tourist destination but for good reason. Even in late October, tourists teem the main drags and near the train stations. However, explore off the beaten path and you'll be rewarded with unbelievable views, gracious hospitality, outstanding food, and memories of this coastal gem.
cinque Terre Pyramid of greatness
in short
We stayed in Riomaggiore, opting for what we believe was the best choice of the five cities for a home base. The weekend consisted of exploring each of the cities carefully with excellent and easy train travel between each of them, and although it was mid-October we lucked out with weather good enough to hit the beach and swim in the chilly water. At the same time, tourists still packed the streets near the trains. Nevertheless it was still an outstanding time and the perfect introduction to Italy. And, of course, the two deers got engaged under the moonlight in Riomaggiore.
what we did
Here's what we recommend in Cinque Terre, in order of visit.
Rio Bistrot - Small, fancy dinner spot that is well worth it. Make a reservation
Ristorante La Torre - Make the small hike above Vernazza and be rewarded with delicious cliffside dining and excellent service
Terra Rossa wine bar - Climb the 300+ steps up from the train in Corniglia and stop by the cute and eclectic wine bar
Nessun Dorma - Get the app, wait for a table, and enjoy this must visit cliffside restaurant serving only charcuterie boards with the perfect picturesque view of Manarola
Il Pescato Cucinato - End it off with a classic Italian fry cone with calamari, squid, potatoes, and more in bundle of greasy goodness
next time
I wouldn't recommend much longer than a weekend or so here due to the cost and amount of things to do as well as throngs of tourists, but it's still a crucial and easy stop with the well-oiled train system from Genoa or Pisa. Beautiful, romantic, and filled with hidden gems if you're willing to look. Go in warmer weather if you can, but watch out for high tourist seasons.
